Built in Cleveland, Ohio in 1905, the SS ''Marquette & Bessemer No. 2'' was a Car Ferry, built to transport railway cars across Lake Erie from Conneaut, Ohio to Port Stanley, Ontario . It had a length of 338 ft, a width of 54 ft, and weighed 2514 tons. The second of two ships built for and named after the Marquette & Bessemer Dock & Navigation Company, she was commonly referred to as "The Car Ferry" by the residents of Conneaut, while Marquette & Bessemer No. 1 was known as "The Collier," as her cargo was always railway cars filled with coal.〔Boyer, Dwight ''Ghost Ships of the Great Lakes'', Dodd, Mead & Co, New York, 1968〕
